In order to better support our International students and given the demands of our rigorous English program, all International students are interviewed upon arrival to St. George's School so that we may determine English proficiency levels. Based on each student’s understanding of the language, as well as their reading and writing ability and grade level, an individual program is then developed. This program, as is determined by a preliminary evaluation, may initially entail private tutoring during the regularly scheduled English Language Arts classes. Possible evaluation modifications might also be recommended. The length and nature of our individualized tutorial interventions are then carefully monitored. The goal of this approach is to strengthen skills and to provide a basic foundation so that the participating students can integrate into our regular English Language Arts classes as soon as possible. All graduating Quebec high school students must eventually write an English Language Arts exam at the conclusion of their Grade 11 year. It is therefore to the advantage of the International student to join regular classes as soon as possible in order to prepare for this task. Some accommodations for additional time and a separate setting are given to International students during exam periods in Grades 9 and 10 (assuming a more limited ability in English). St. George’s also offers a variety of other interventions to further support International students in all other subject areas. In some cases, the International student may be integrated into the “regular” classroom and supported by a modified evaluation process to allow for their further development of the language component. In other cases, International students may be supported by a reduced course load and be granted more time to complete their assignments. The school may also recommend private tutoring for International students so that they may better cope with the linguistic demands of other courses such as Math, History and Sciences. St. George's School of Montreal supports International students with an individualized program that is unique to the ability and needs of each student. Progress is carefully monitored and integration is achieved as each student is able to assume the challenges of our curriculum. |
